Important COVID Information about Crew and the Fall Season

Dear Mercy Crew Families,

It has been a long time since we last sent out a communication to you and we hope that you have had an enjoyable summer. We know that much has changed during this unprecedented time and this school year will certainly be different than anything we have ever experienced.

As many of you may already know, Governor Cuomo announced last week that low- to moderate-risk high school sports may begin on September 21. This announcement has left many schools across the state, including Mercy, with more questions than answers and many concerns.

Currently, we are working with the Mercy Athletic Director, Mr. Anthony Yandek, on a resumption plan for the fall – one where the health and safety of our girls are in the forefront. While we wait for additional guidance as to what we can and cannot do, we would like to share with you what we do know and what the fall crew season will look like:

  • All fall regattas have been cancelled.
  • No high school, college, nor adult teams are rowing on the water in team boats.
  • Local and regional rowing clubs are focusing on land-based strength and conditioning training outdoors to help prepare for the spring season.
  • Carpooling is not allowed.
  • Students are not allowed in the school buildings after 3:00 p.m.

We are navigating unchartered waters and we want to do our best for the girls to keep them engaged in the sport and connected with their teammates. Given the information above, we will be aligning our plan for the rowing season with those of the other local and regional teams. We will focus on land-based strength and condition training outdoors, weather permitting. If we are not able to train on the ergs due to restrictions, we will be offering the opportunity for our girls to rent one of our 18 ergs for home training.

We also want to hear from you! Your voice is important. We will be sending out a short survey in the coming days to help us asses your overall sentiment about having your daughter participate in crew this fall. Coupled with the information above, your feedback will be used to guide us with our planning.

Thank you,
The Mercy Crew Board

Hello Team & Families,
I hope this email finds you well and that you are looking forward to going back to school. We are remaining hopeful that we will be able to practice together in some way this fall. School sports will not be allowed to start until at least September 21. We are still working out the details of what our fall practices will look like.

We feel it is important to stay together as a team and continue to support one another and have some fun. Unfortunately at this point all of our fall races have been cancelled, but we will find other ways to challenge ourselves.

I will continue to share with you as we learn more.
